Rural America Part I

This is some rough video but I am going to go ahead and show it because I think it has important content...

It was my intention to document the events that led up to the closing of the Washington County Arkansas Livestock Sale Barn in Fayetteville, Arkansas. This documentary is an account of an exchange center for cattlemen that was in operation for 73 years. Since 1936 mostly men and some women have come to the sale barn to buy and sell livestock. I am compelled to acknowledge the changes for the small rural livestock farm and would like to understand more about the large commercial livestock industry and its effect on the food chain. Moreover, how does this change in agrarian culture affect human relationships with the landscape? How does the commercialization of agricultural products and genetically engineered enhancement detach and dehumanize our ethical investment of human labor and respect for livestock animals?

Until Herman's wife passed away, they loved to garden together. Now that she is gone he continues to garden. Herman loved his wife and this garden is a symbol of his love for her and his struggle with her absence.

About 10 miles south of Fayetteville, circa 1850-1900 this trail system was started by the cavalcades and homesteaders who settled in the Ozark Mountains. (The beautiful, well mannered horse is Sugar.)

Whiteside Installation

A project that I have underway that will occur over time is an installation that includes one hundred three-inch-by-three-inch dolomitic limestone blocks arranged into a grid pattern. In this instance by placing one hundred speckled Japanese Coturnix quail eggs on each block it evokes a similar sense of repetitive meditation as seen in the artists’ work that I have mentioned in recent research involving nonpartisan expression. I use squares organized in grid structures to implicate order, to embrace commonality and interconnectivity. Both the egg shell and limestone contain calcium carbonate thus share mineral properties. The limestone's ample weight heaved from the earth in contrast to the almost weightless egg shell released from the body of the delicate quail are architectural constructs within the landscape. There is much more to process regarding symbolic meaning within this installation that I continue to explore.

Arkansas is the nation’s leading poultry producer, supplying 12.6 percent of all the chickens, turkeys and eggs consumed in the United States. Arkansas people produce nearly 18 million chickens each week. Today, Arkansas poultry is helping to feed people not only in the United States, but also in the Soviet Union, Romania, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, and many other countries around the world. Additionally, it took millions of years for the geological cycle to form the Ozark hills that consists of dolomitic limestone, perhaps the oldest geological formation of any size in the United States. Furthermore,within the context of architectural principles the grid is an infrastructure that highly complements the era of ubiquitous digital information and services reaching any device and any location. Planning and Termination Project

My first priority within my practice is painting. This project began with the idea that I would prepare the wooden boards for paintings. After applying six to eight coats of black gesso sanding in between layers, I wrapped each one in a white flour cloth. These surfaces have the potential to become paintings but at this point I am terminating the process, aborting the possible paintings. Therefore, I consider this a conceptual painting project.

Although this project is conceptual and was initially driven toward painting, it is clearly about conception, life and contemplation surrounding the unborn.

A Proper Burial

Several months ago I saw Jack Sal’s work in "Art In America" and realized we are working with similar ideas and materials. When working with corrosives there is a time element involved for the chemical reactions take place. Consequently, the traces of mineral build up and rust in my work is caused by rain and partially burying the steel plates in mounds of leaves that fell last fall. This project has been going on for over a year now. Another part of this project involves found objects buried in concrete. Again there is a time element, which started with thinking, then writing, followed by inspiration, hunting for the objects, and then preparing forms and waiting for concrete to set up. I like the way Sal mounts the metal onto concrete with bolts.

The idea of burying things and digging them up later is fascinating. My backyard is sort of a voodoo graveyard for evil brought my way that I need to get rid of. There is no wicked karma that I can't handle with a shovel and some dirt. Unfortunately sometimes I must bury birds that hit the windows and when needed coins for good luck. I bury leftover kitchen, fruit and vegetable waste near specific plants rather than throw them in a large compost heap. In particular, my roses love a banana peel so it seems more efficient for me to feed certain plants what makes them grow best. Sometimes vermin dig them up before the plants get them but I feel that there is enough for everyone. These images are from the buried steel plate project.

Cabbage Chairs By Japanese Architect Oki Sato

On a recent visit to the city I attended Ghost Stories, an opening for Japanese based Oki Sato at New York's Friedman Benda.

Sato explained to me that while working with a silk fabric that came carefully packed in layers of paper to protect and hold the shape of its pleats he stumbled upon this design for a chair.
Each layer of paper was peeled back to unpack the silk that was rolled in a coil. The paper packing served as a model but was not strong enough to support weight. Further development involved finding a fabric that was going to be stable enough to support weight so that it could be used as a chair. The final design is made of a non-woven synthetic material similar to fiber-mesh.

Bully, with his mouth full, kicked the dirt back with his right front hoof just before I took this photo. I decided it might be best if I moved on. The reason I even stopped to take this photo was because I had lunch with my friend Linda from Monet, Missouri. Linda raises beef cattle and quarter horses. She came into to town to see a doctor about her broken foot and arm from falling off her horse trailer. During lunch, she explained problems with some of her cows delivering calves that are not old enough to care for them. She said "some heifers are better mothers" and she had a few that were too young and did not get the birth sac off the calf in time, resulting in calves suffocating. Part of Linda's job, as a cattle farmer is to make sure her cows and calves are cared for when the heifers are inexperienced. The bull in this particular photo belongs to my neighbor down the road. This cow is being kept separate from the herd until he is needed.

My day spent taking photographs of a yard sale, laundry hanging, mailboxes and the graveyard has inspired me to start working in the realm of collage in the studio. Mr. Huffman's name handwritten on his mail box as well as the bullet hole in the side of it speaks about contemporary rural America... I particularly like Margorie's installation of rags hung by clothespins from Christmas lights strung across the yard to make a clothesline. Margorie was fine if I took pictures, as long as I was not with the law or Federal Government and if the images were not to be used for any detriment. The yard sale and the laundry hanging embodies the idea of an installation of women working on their day off...each person at the yard sale made about $200 dollars that day and got rid of things they did not need. Margorie got some laundry done and was puzzled by my thinking of her laundry and her work as beautiful.

The past several days in the studio have presented me with work inspired by referencing Helen Frankenthaler. She is known for her abstract expressionistic landscapes on various unprepared surfaces. Although I have been taught that archival approaches to my work are most appropriate, I have chosen to paint canvases without priming them. I am treating them as if they were watercolors on canvas. I have also been painting wood prepared with clear primer (much like a synthetic version of rabbit skin glue) using oil and cold wax and a scraping method.

Much of the color is being determined by scraping and blending process while the work is in the hands of it's maker. I like allowing the wood to show through.

Intervals of Time and Space in Little Rock went well. I was given feedback about my work that will impact my further development and am starting to hear some remarks weaving consistent threads within my paintings. Although, some are not as interested in the environmental work, I am not ready to forgo this subject matter. Currently, I am working on my research paper as well as experimental work in the studio.
